AI Reply Format (Plain Text or Markdown)

AI Reply Format (Plain Text or Markdown)

What it does

Controls how a bot writes its replies on every channel (web chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, email, Apple Messages, and the other text channels). Voice calls always use spoken-style text.

Options

  • Use global (default): plain text. No markdown (no bold, headings, backticks, tables) and no em or en dashes. The bot uses commas, periods, or a plain hyphen.
  • Force plain text: same as the global default, pinned for this bot even if the global default changes.
  • Allow markdown: the bot may use bullets, bold, numbered lists and tables. If your bot's prompt or the customer asks for bullets or tables, the bot uses them.

Where to set it

  • Admin: Bots, pick the bot, AI Settings, General, Reply format.
  • CLI: velaro ai-config set-reply-format <id> --mode global|plain|markdown
  • MCP: ai_config_set_reply_format with aiConfigId and mode.
  • API: PUT /api/AIConfiguration/{id}/reply-format with { "mode": "plain" }.

Notes

Apple Messages and SMS follow the same setting. Markdown symbols can show up as literal characters in SMS and iMessage, so leave plain text on unless you know your customers' channel renders it. A plain hyphen is always allowed.
