Choosing How Your Bot Shows Choices (Selection Presentation)

What Is It?

When your bot offers a set of choices, such as products, locations, appointment times or articles, you control how that list looks and how many items appear. You can set one default for the whole bot and then adjust it for individual channels.

Where to Find It

Go to Bots, open your bot, choose AI Settings, then Channel Overrides. At the top you will see "All channels (site default)". Each channel you have turned on has its own section underneath, called "How

The Settings

  • Show choices as: Carousel (swipeable cards), List, or Text only.
  • Maximum choices shown: a number from 1 to 25. The bot tells the visitor when more results exist than it is showing.
  • When a choice list repeats: show it again every time, or collapse a list the visitor has already seen.
  • Show a Tell me more button: lets the visitor ask for more detail about a choice. You can change the button wording (up to 64 characters).
  • Show follow-up suggestion chips: short tappable replies after the bot answers.

Every setting has an Inherit option. Inherit means "use the next level up".

Which Setting Wins

Velaro checks three places in order and uses the first one that has a value:

1. The channel's own setting.

2. The "All channels (site default)" setting.

3. The Velaro default: carousel, a small number of choices on phone-style channels, repeated lists shown every time, Tell me more on, follow-up chips on.

How Each Channel Behaves

  • Web chat: choices appear as a carousel, list or text, based on your setting.
  • Apple Messages for Business: choices are sent as Apple's native rich links.
  • WhatsApp: choices are sent as native lists or cards.
  • Text messages (SMS): choices are sent as short text with a small number of items.
  • Phone (IVR): the bot gives a short spoken summary only. It never reads out links.

Tips

  • Set the "All channels" row first, then override only the channels that need something different.
  • Keep the maximum low on phone-style channels so messages stay easy to read.
  • Remember to select Save Overrides after you make changes.

Set It Without the Admin Screen

The same settings can be read and changed through the Velaro MCP tools ai_config_channel_overrides_get and ai_config_selection_presentation_set, or with the Velaro command line tool using velaro ai-config set-channel-override.
